Urban Green Development (UGD) is a real estate developer and property management company in Denver, CO with a strong focus on sustainability and building efficiency. One of its newest developments includes the construction of a mixed use apartment building with retail/commercial space and 46 sustainable apartment units. UGD decided to use a battery storage system instead of a diesel generator to provide backup power to the building.
Application
Elevator Backup
Connectivity
Peak Shaving Capabilities
Kronus customized and installed a lithium-ion battery storage system to provide backup storage to a large residential apartment building.
The battery system meets code requirements to provide backup energy to the elevator in case of a power outage.
The battery system is integrated with an onsite solar array and can connect to additional battery racks in the future.
Capacity to reduce peak energy usage of the facility by 20% - 40% to greatly reduce utility bills.
Approach
Backup storage needs and building loads were examined to identify what size system would be appropriate for the facility.

Key considerations when designing the battery storage system included:
-
affordability
-
minimal installation requirements easy to monitor
Results
UGD decided to install the DOLOMITE 70kWh battery system to provide reliable backup storage and energy security for the building's residence. The battery provides backup energy for the elevator, residential unit plug loads, and lighting, while maintaining additional energy to allocate to other services in the building.
