Kronus Engineering was approached by Daylight Energy Services in partnership with Alaska Native Renewable Industries to design and manufacture a battery storage system to serve the remote community of Noatak, Alaska.
Approach
To increase its energy resilience, Noatak, Alaska needed a battery storage system that could provide backup power and connect to solar. Kronus provided development services in the following areas to help Noatak reach its battery system goal:

-
System design and customization
-
Temperature calculations due to the high temps in the summer and extreme cold in the winter.
-
System assembly
-
Complete system testing
-
Onsite installation and commissioning
In order to create a customized battery solution, Kronus examined the project requirements, energy storage needs, safety certification requirements, and desired control functions. Due to the remote nature of Noatak, Alaska, the battery storage system needed to be built into a weatherized container. Pylontech batteries and an EPC500 inverter were chosen due to their robust nature and capacity. An Ageto control system was chosen to provide remote access to the system and high-level safety features.
Results
The containerized battery storage system includes four racks of Pylontech batteries, 109kWh each. The racks are integrated with a 500kW EPC inverter. It was installed in the summer of 2023 within a precision temperature-controlled container built for extreme climates.

Kronus continues to work closely with Daylight Energy Services and Alaska Native Renewable Industries on battery storage projects throughout Alaska.
